Asterisk on open WRT

January 27, 2008 – 1:54 am

VoIP is a very exciting area that became widely available. Recently, I was trying to explore it.

 I tried the following gadgets:

  • Nokia N800 with GTalk and Skype.
  • VoiceGear Skype adapter – very buggy software. Otherwise, real neat idea.
  • GTalk client on Blackberry

Here are some ideas for the next step.

  1. Get a Linksys WRT54GL (Open Source Linux version).
  2. Install an OpenWRT software with webif2 interface.
  3. Install and configure Asterisk PBX (There is a good book on the asterisk website)
  4. Connect PSTN phones using Linksys SPA2102

Here is a diagram for the solution:

Here is a complete tutorial.

Of course, I could possibly buy a Linksys PBX solution SPA9000 to replace both asterisk and the need for the SPA2102. This is another point for further research.
